The Do For Others Day PROCLAMATION
- March 19, 2024
- Susanne Arens
What if there was such a thing as a “Do For Others Day?” A special day with a primary purpose of encouraging everybody to do at least one, unexpected act of kindness for someone else. It often takes very little effort to make a challenging day a little bit better, and the results can have a lasting and profound effect on not only the person who receives the act of kindness, but also the person who gives it.
This special day was proposed by Colorado Springs resident, Susanne Arens, Founder of the National 'The Do For Others Days', and Co-Producer of a just published children’s book of the same name, which describes how, centuries ago, a diverse group of “Critters” survived in the wilderness by being responsible, independent, and working together for the benefit of all. The book showcases how America has benefitted, throughout its long history, from the skills and talents of individuals from many cultures and backgrounds…and also promotes the truism that one of the key strengths of our country is the diversity of skills, talent, ideas, and contributions of its many peoples (as proclaimed by a classical Latin phrase that appears on The Great Seal of the United States, “E Pluribus Unum – Out Of Many, One”).
Susanne is encouraging everyone to not just celebrate the official “Do For Others Day” each year (proclaimed as being March 20th by the U.S. National Day Archives), but to also consider proclaiming their own, ongoing “Do For Others Day” – and look upon it as an opportunity for individuals, families, schools, and even businesses to work toward placing more focus on what makes our diverse country similar and less on what makes us different.
For more information, you are encouraged to check out the “The Do For Others Day” Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok pages that were set up for people to also share their own acts of kindness (and describe what impacts these acts may have had) – or describe ones that they might have personally witnessed. The resulting pictures, videos, and stories are intended to bring more hope for humanity in a world where we see so much conflict and division…and it all starts with being willing to give just a little more of ourselves.
