These statistics are particularly concerning given that the ability to read, comprehend, and communicate in one’s given language is key to so many important things. It impacts future job opportunities, income, social standing, and even self-confidence. The following NCES quote addresses even stronger concerns, “Ensuring strong reading and writing skills in the early stages of a child’s development is vitally important to preventing problems later in life such as unemployment, societal disconnection, and even justice system involvement.”
